BMI statistics an interesting facts
BMI, known also as Body Mass Index is not only an indicator of your obesity, but also can be used to predict some diseases. The World Health Organization has classified the diseases associated with an increased BMI in 3 categories:
- Slightly increased risk: Cancer (breast, endometrium, colon), in females: alteration of reproduction and fertility in females, low back pain, fetal risk
- Moderately increased risk: chronic heart disease, hypertension, osteoarthritis, hyperuricemia and gout
- Greatly increased risk: gallbladder disease, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, breathlessness, sleep apnea.
Also, both in males and females, BMI showed to be an indicator of increased ALT (Alanine aminotransferase), a laboratory indicator of the liver function. Another study showed that both in males and females, BMI is a predictive indicator of death from cardiovascular disease.
A recent study, on 900000 US individuals showed that females with a BMI higher than 40 kg/m2 had a risk of cancer of 1.62 as compared to women with BMI between 18 and 24.9 kg/m2. In both genders, increased BMI was always associated with a higher rate of death due to cancer of esophagus, colon and rectum, liver, gallbladder, pancreas and kidney.
According to CSFII (Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals) 1994-1996, there were 48.7% males and 51.3% females. Among them, 60.4% males and 46.4% females were overweight, with a BMI of 25kg/m2 or higher. It showed, that contrary to the general belief, men were most obese than women.
Other variable that seems to influence the obesity prevalence in population is the education. It showed that population with high education are likely to have better dietary habits and health-related knowledge. This might happen because the high-educated people earn more money and they can afford low-calorie nutritious foods, as fruit and vegetables, which are comparatively more expensive than the caloric dense foods such as fried snacks and bakery. Also, because of their knowledge and the ability to choose better food, adult males and females are better positioned to make healthier dietary choices than adults with less education.
