ESL teacher dies of heart attack while driving car
EAST ST. LOUIS -- A popular East St. Louis Senior High School teacher died in a one-car accident on his way to work Friday.
James Henry King, 61, apparently suffered a heart attack while driving on Interstate 64, his daughter said.
Illinois State Police said the accident occurred at 7 a.m. near the Illinois 159 exit.
Witnesses told Illinois State Police that King was traveling west in the right lane when his vehicle slowly traveled across all three lanes of traffic, eventually striking the center median wall.
The first officer to respond found King unresponsive. He was taken to Memorial Hospital in Belleville, a state police report said.
LaTia King, the daughter of James H. King, said: "My father was helping someone on the road. He helped that person and got back into his vehicle and while driving had a heart attack. He didn't hit anyone and he wasn't hit either, which I am glad about."
LaTia King said her father was "The Billy Dee (Williams) of East St. Louis."
"He liked to dress. He was a suit wearing man. He was very debonair. He was a fountain of youth," she said.
She saw her father Wednesday, but spoke to him over the phone Thursday.
"I always told him I loved him. This just shows me even more how important it is that we tell the people we love how much we love them," LaTia King said.
James H. King taught social studies in school District 189 for more than three years, said district spokesman Douglas Clark Jr.
Clark said officials with District 189 want to "extend their condolences to his family during this difficult hour."
"It's hard for everybody here at the school district," Clark said.
